Polypropylene Membrane

A specialized solution within our Water Proofing services.

Scope of Work:

Provide and install a high-quality PP (Polypropylene) waterproofing membrane system to designated surfaces (e.g., roofs, basements, wet areas, foundations) to create a robust and durable water barrier. The work shall include:

  • Surface Preparation: Thoroughly clean and prepare the substrate. This involves removing all dirt, dust, loose particles, oil, grease, curing compounds, and any other contaminants that may hinder adhesion. Repair all cracks, honeycombs, and undulations using suitable repair mortars to ensure a smooth, sound, and dry surface.
  • Angle Fillets/Coving: Create a 50mm x 50mm (or as specified) angle fillet (coving) at all horizontal and vertical junctions (floor-to-wall joints, corners) using polymer-modified mortar to eliminate sharp angles and facilitate continuous membrane application.
  • Primer Application (if required): Apply a compatible primer as per the PP membrane manufacturer's recommendations. Ensure uniform coverage and allow adequate drying time.
  • Membrane Laying: Carefully lay the specified PP (Polypropylene) waterproofing membrane (e.g., 400GSM, 1.2mm thick, or as per specification) onto the prepared and primed surface. Ensure proper alignment and minimize wrinkles or air bubbles.
  • Joint Overlaps: Create overlaps at all joints and seams (typically 75mm to 100mm, or as per manufacturer's guidelines) and securely bond them using the manufacturer's recommended method (e.g., thermal welding, adhesive bonding, or cement mortar with glue powder).
  • Detailing: Provide meticulous detailing around penetrations (e.g., pipes, drains), corners, and upstands (e.g., parapet walls to a specified height, typically 150mm to 300mm), ensuring the membrane is continuous and fully sealed.
  • Protection Layer (if required): Apply a protective layer over the installed PP membrane to safeguard it from mechanical damage during subsequent construction activities. This could involve a cement-sand screed (e.g., 20mm to 50mm thick with integral waterproofing compound) or a geotextile layer, as specified.
  • Ponding Test (if applicable): Conduct a ponding test for a minimum of 48 hours (or as specified) to verify the watertightness of the installed membrane. Any leaks identified shall be rectified immediately.

Materials:

  • PP (Polypropylene) Waterproofing Membrane (specified thickness, GSM, and roll dimensions)
  • Polymer-modified repair mortar for surface preparation and fillets
  • Compatible primer (if required by membrane manufacturer)
  • Bonding adhesive or cement mortar with glue powder (as per application method)
  • Reinforcement fabric/tape for detailing (if required)
  • Protective screed materials (cement, sand, integral waterproofing compound) or geotextile
  • Tools for cleaning, cutting, laying, bonding, and application.

Safety Guidelines:

  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, dust masks, and appropriate footwear.
  • Ensure proper ventilation in enclosed spaces, especially when using adhesives or during torching (if applicable for specific PP types, though many are adhesive-based).
  • Use caution when working at heights, on sloped surfaces, or with heavy rolls of membrane.
  • Handle sharp tools and cutting equipment with care.
  • Follow all manufacturer's specific application and safety instructions for the PP membrane and associated materials.

Additional Notes:

  • Specify the exact type and thickness/GSM of the Polypropylene membrane (e.g., "1.2mm thick Polypropylene composite membrane with non-woven fabric backing").
  • Detail any specific requirements for surface finish (e.g., smooth, rough).
  • Clarify the method of bonding (e.g., "cold applied self-adhesive," "hot-air welded," "bonded with cement mortar").
  • Confirm the height of upstands on vertical surfaces.
  • State the duration and depth of the ponding test, if applicable.
  • All work shall strictly follow the manufacturer's technical data sheets and application guidelines.
